Overcoming Anxiety Through Compassionate Mind Training

For more information or to register please click here.

Anxiety and chronic worry are major sources of suffering that conventional medicine has, at best, a mixed track record in treating. For thousands of years, global wisdom traditions have held that training the mind and cultivating compassion can be highly effective in helping people face their fears, and a growing body of scientific research supports that view. This workshop with an expert in “Compassion-Focused Therapy” draws from cutting-edge neuroscience, evolutionary psychology, and Buddhist mindfulness methods to teach us innovative, evidence-based meditation, as well as visualization and cognitive re-framing techniques designed to increase our emotional strength and psychological flexibility. You will leave this workshop equipped with an array of powerful new tools and healing perspectives that will permit you to move beyond anxiety and live with renewed meaning, purpose, and vitality.

Join top leaders in the field of compassion to learn about the major compassion programs, compassion training, and more.  The Center for CFT Founder, Dr. Dennis Tirch, will be delivering a training on Sunday morning.

There are many diverse ways to alleviate suffering, but compassion and connection are always part of the process. In the growing field of compassion teaching, it’s not easy to keep up with the latest programs, developments, challenges, and successes. Join top leaders in the field to explore how compassion work is affecting change and making a difference in people’s lives.

Whether you are already teaching compassion, or are interested in learning more about compassion as a general subject, this community-building conference brings together various compassion programs all in one place and provides an opportunity to:

  • Learn about the distinctive competencies of major compassion programs
  • Differentiate compassion programs from mindfulness programs or programs focused only on sympathetic or pure empathic responses
  • Explore larger issues of science-based efficacy
  • Network with other compassion professionals—teachers, therapists, scholars, and researchers

The conference includes presentations about the five empirically supported compassion training programs, a panel discussion on working with specific communities of need and the variations they may require, compassion meditation sessions, and more.

Teachers:

Thupten Jinpa, PhD; Geshe Lobsang Tenzin Negi, PhD; Kristin Neff, PhD; Christopher K. Germer, PhD; Steven Hickman, PsyD; Michelle Becker, LMFT; Kc Branscomb; Timothy Harrison; Rhoda Schuling ; Dennis Tirch, PhD; Karen Bluth, PhD; Lorraine M. Hobbs; Monica C. Worline, PhD

"Don't miss the opportunity to get extensive training from Dr. Dennis Tirch and Dr. Laura Silberstein - two of the world's leading practitioners of compassion-focused therapies. The amount of seats are limited and this is a very rare and unique occasion.

This workshop takes place in Stockholm on October 15-16th, 2018 AND
Copenhagen on October 17-18th, 2018"

Rather than being a soft option, the deliberate activation of our mindful compassion can generate the courage, emotional strength and psychological flexibility we need to face life’s challenges and opportunities. This is the fierce compassion that lies at the heart of mastering Compassion Focused ACT. This workshop will bring us into deep contact with such a capacity.

Dr. Dennis Tirch and Dr. Laura Silberstein will offer a 2 day intensive workshop for therapists who want to move towards psychotherapy mastery through a direct experience of Compassion-Focused ACT. Personal practice of advanced mindfulness, compassion, and acceptance based techniques forms the core of this workshop. Rather than just learning how to use these methods in therapy, participants will benefit from direct, personal practice of the core Compassion-Focused Therapy and ACT practices.

Recent advances in psychological research, theory and practice have suggested that compassion may be a significant, active process in psychotherapy effectiveness. Participants will learn a new evolutionary model of compassionate flexibility, that is grounded in Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), ACT, and elements of Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP). Direct, experiential exercises, including a range of compassion focused imagery practices, will invite participants into contact with their compassionate minds.

The workshop will have the quality of a retreat – a retreat where the centerpiece is deep experiential work and self-reflection. Working together will be a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time learning with two of the world’s leading practitioners of compassion-focused therapies. While we will be exploring dimensions of the science of compassion in an ACT-friendly way, clinicians of any theoretical orientation and level of experience may benefit from this immersion in working with the compassionate courage and mindful wisdom.

CFT TRAINING IN NJ! - Overcoming Shame With Mindfulness, Acceptance and Compassion Training - An intensive DBT/CFT workshop with Dr. Shireen Rizvi & Dr. Dennis Tirch

For the Schedule and for registration information, Please Click Here.

Shame is one of the most challenging experiences that therapists and clients will face together. We know from our research that shame is a trans-diagnostic process, that can block progress in therapy for many people. The experience of shame is associated with suicidal behaviors, substance use, and other negative emotions. Treating shame effectively is extremely important, yet it isn't usually at forefront of our psychotherapy training. How do we build our skills to engage shame effectively?

This workshop brings together two internationally known experts in evidence based treatments designed to shame and emotion dysregulation: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT). Participants in this intensive training will explore a wide range of experiential techniques drawn from these cutting-edge approaches for overcoming the destructive influence of shame.

The workshop will teach participants direct, experiential methods for cultivating the compassionate mind, using meditation, visualization, and other dimensions of training the mind.

The Holiday Inn in Orangeburg, NY is offering us a discount rate of approximately 105.00 per evening. Their facility is 2 miles away from the venue, and we will be arranging shuttles and transportation to and from the location.

The code for the hotel registration is CMF. You can book it directly from their website by clicking here

Their are other places to stay nearby. For example, the  "Time Hotel" is 5 miles away in Nyack, is more of a “boutique” hotel, and their rates should be about 150.00 per evening.

There are several nature walks and restaurants near the venue and just 10 minutes walk from Sparkill, you can find the village of Piermont, which has a wide range of food, entertainment and art options, too.  If you arrange transportation into nearby Nyack, you will find an interesting Hudson Valley village with a lot of cultural life. Furthermore, we are going to be very near to NYC, so if you are traveling in, you might want to schedule some time to enjoy New York, or the lower Hudson Valley!

Travel: The closest airport is likely Newark, NJ, which is about an hour away. There is bus service into Sparkill, right near the facility. Also, there are trains into Tarrytown, NY and other nearby locations, too, which have subsequent buses to the venue and near the hotels.

Despite the stellar lineup that has agreed to join us, we at The Center for CFT want you to know that this retreat is ultimately a labor of love, and a “mom and pop” operation for the retreat, so feel free to be in touch with me at any time to help make your experience work. - DT

Workshop Description:
During this workshop, participants will explore how the science of compassion can be used to enhance and expand our clinical work, using an ACT-consistent, Compassion Focused Therapy approach. Recent advances in psychological research, theory and practice have suggested that compassion may be a significant, active process in psychotherapy effectiveness. This two day clinical/experiential workshop is specifically designed to help ACT and other behavior therapy practitioners deepen their understanding and practice of compassion focused treatment of anxiety and mood disorders . Rather than being a soft option, the deliberate activation of our compassion system can generate the emotional strength and psychological flexibility we need to face life's challenges, and step forward into lives of meaning, purpose and vitality.

Human beings have evolved to have a fast acting, automatically triggered threat detection system that can fire up at a moment’s notice to help us survive. However, the power and efficiency of our threat detection leads to trouble, when a struggle with our feared experiences begins to dominate the ways that we approach our lives. Fortunately, we have also evolved to have powerful allies in facing life’s – our evolved capacity for mindfulness, wisdom and compassionate courage. This workshop will take an experiential journey into the foundations of CFT's compassionate imagery, meditation practices, and applications in exposure and behavioral activation. These methods can compliment and strengthen even a state of the art, ACT approach. Participants will learn how cultivating compassion can undermine fusion with shame based self-criticism, help address the narrowing influence of threat based behavioral patterns, and how the experience of compassionate courage can help to mobilize us to move towards lives of greater meaning and vitality.

Fierce Compassion and Mindful Courage: An Introduction to Compassion-Focused Therapy with a Clinical Focus on Anxiety and Shame

13 CE Credit Hours

Current psychological research suggests that compassion may be a significant, active process in psychotherapy effectiveness. This two day clinical and experiential workshop will introduce you to compassion-focused therapy (CFT), an evidence-based psychotherapy that makes the compassion process central to clinical work.

In these two fast-paced days, you’ll learn CFT from one of the US’s leading experts in the model. Through direct, experiential exercises, including a range of focused imagery practices, you’ll directly contact your compassionate mind. The deliberate activation of your compassionate mind can generate emotional strength and psychological flexibility necessary for the challenging work of clinical psychotherapy. This workshop will take you on an experiential journey into compassionate imagery, meditation practice, and effective means for training our minds in fierce compassion and mindful courage. You’ll learn how cultivating compassion can undermine the impact of anxiety, worry and shame based self-criticism and explore how CFT methods can help address the narrowing influence of threat-based behavioral patterns. As the end of the workshop, you’ll have a valuable set of skills you can use to help your clients move towards lives of greater meaning and vitality.
